The Invitation.

The past few weeks at home have been pure bliss. Anna fussed over me like an over-protective mother hen; whenever I took a seat, my cats Ba and Ka fought constantly over my lap. David and Robert were almost as needy. I was home!

In my absence, Daniel was safely ushered back to his apartment; Father O'Malley returned to his rectory. Per Carlo, the young priest did quite well adapting to his new vampiric station in life...

As I lounged lazily on one of the sofas in the great room, Anna entered with a tray piled high with mail. I sighed with irritation as she placed the tray on the table before me.

"Madam - you have been avoiding your correspondence for weeks. It's better if you go through it all and get it over with, yes?"

I groaned. "I suppose that you are right, Anna. I wanted to go for as long as possible without any outside interference. But life goes on, and I must attend to it". Under my breath, I mumbled 'This is a lot of shit', aware that Helene would have already paid the bills.

Anna nodded, then left, only to suddenly reappear with a tray of lemonade and cranberry juice.

"Will that be all, madam?" she asked. I smiled at her. "That will be all. Thank you, Anna."

While going through the pile of fashion magazines, catalogues, and donation requests, I came upon a finely woven black envelope. The pale gray envelope that it came in had no return address. It was postmarked from New York City.

I picked up the black envelope and stared at it for a moment before turning it over. The dark red wax seal opened smoothly. It was an invitation to the Autumn Ball; this year, the host was a high sire who I was not familiar with - one Lord Fabien D'Arc. What little I knew of him was: He was French, around four or five hundred years old, and very rich. A mere babe amongst master vampires, nonetheless a person of note. I was not interested in attending a ball so soon after Julia's execution, but in not knowing this Lord Fabien, I figured that it would be interesting to attend after all.
